Patient Preparation for Lab test sample collection

  • Fasting Plasma Glucose
Patient must be on overnight fasting for at least 8 hours before giving the blood sample. If the patient is taking any medications it should be reported to the lab.
    2-hour postprandial Plasma Glucose
For Postprandial Plasma Glucose, sample should be collected exactly 2 hours after completing breakfast. Patient has to take regular diabetic medications as prescribed by physician, while giving sample for FBS / PPBS
    Random Plasma Glucose
Random Plasma Glucose can be done regardless of the time of food intake at any time of the day.

  • Patient need to fast for 9 – 12 hours overnight before the Lipid profile test is performed.
Dinner at 8pm is ideal for the test.
Only water is allowed during the over night fasting period.
    Should not consume any alcohol.

Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, HDL Cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol, VLDL Cholesterol are the parameters included under Lipid profile. Serum Triglyceride values will vary depending on food intake.

  • No specific preparation is required.
(If the patient is on medication for any chronic ailment, that information should be given to the technician prior to sample collection)

    Hormone Profiles
No specific preparation is required unless / otherwise instructed (Serum Cortisol at 8.00 A.M. & 4.00 P.M.).

  • This test should be performed only after preparing the patient for the test.
Patient should be on unrestricted carbohydrate diet for three days prior to testing.
Patient should abstain from smoking and drinking alcohol during the preparation period.
Patients who regularly exercise can continue with their exercise regimen before having the test done. Those who are not used to any exercise in the past should not start any new exercise program before having the test done.
Drugs may interfere with the glucose estimation. Hence patient is advised to stop any medication 24hrs prior to testing – except lifesaving drugs. If they are consuming life saving drugs, they need not stop them but the information has to be given to the collection centre for proper interpretation of the patient values.
The test is usually carried out in the morning after an overnight fasting for at least for 8 hours.
Patient has to be informed that the waiting period for the test is 2 hours at the collection centre. Blood is drawn for determination of fasting plasma glucose. If the Fasting plasma glucose is less than 126 mg/dL then proceed with oral intake of Glucose.
After collection of the fasting sample, 82.5gms of monohydrate glucose in 300ml of water is given orally. It should be consumed with in five (5) minutes and the time is noted down. The patient should be informed to give sample exactly at 2 hrs. Blood sample is collected in gray top vacutainer
Patient should sit in the waiting area till the completion of the investigations and should not eat, drink or smoke during that period.
For non obese Children between 4 – 15 yrs it is 1.925grams of Monohydrate glucose/Kg body weight.

  • One step strategy:

This test is generally done for pregnant women (24 – 28 weeks) as per the Guideline given by ADA.
This test should be performed only after preparing the patient for the test.
Patient should be on unrestricted carbohydrate diet from last three days before testing.
Patient should abstain from smoking and alcohol during the preparation period.
Patients who regularly exercise can continue with it before having test done. Those who are not used to any exercise in the past should not start any exercise program before having test done.
Drugs may interfere with the glucose estimation. Hence patient is advised to stop any medication 24hrs prior to testing- except lifesaving drugs. If they are consuming life saving drugs, they need not stop them but the information has to be given to the collection centre for proper interpretation.
The test is usually carried out in the morning after a night’s fast of at least for 8 hours.
Patient has to be informed that the waiting period for the completion of test is 2 hours at the collection centre as many blood samples have to be collected. (Ideal time for testing is between 7 – 9 am)
Blood is drawn for determination of fasting plasma glucose. If the Fasting plasma glucose is less than 126 mg/dL, then proceed with oral intake of Glucose.
After collection of the fasting sample, for a pregnant adult 82.5gms of monohydrate glucose in 300ml of water will be given. It should be consumed with in five (5) minutes. The time of consumption is noted down and patient should be informed about further samples to be collected one-hour interval for subsequent 2 hours (1- and 2-hour samples)
Patient should sit in the waiting area till the completion of the investigations and should not eat, drink or smoke during that period.

  • No specific preparation is required for this test.
Regardless of food intake at anytime patient can come at any time during pregnancy
82.5gms of anhydrous Glucose is dissolved in 300ml of water and it should be consumed within 5 min and blood is collected after 2 hours for plasma glucose estimation.
Patient should sit in the waiting area till the completion of the investigations and should not eat, drink, smoke during that period.

Preparation of a Patient Prior to Radiology Investigations

  • Most ultrasound examinations do not require any preparation. Patients undergoing an abdominal, gallbladder or renal artery ultrasound should remain on fasting for at least 6 hours prior to the exam. Patients undergoing Prenatal or Transvaginal Pelvic ultrasound may be asked to drink several glasses of clear fluids prior to the exam in order to have a full bladder.

  • Patient should not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the ultrasound.

Patient must inform the sonographer if he/she has undergone previous abdominal surgery, abdominal imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI or if the female patient doubts that she may be pregnant.

  • Avoid eating, drinking, or taking your medicine immediately before your scan.

Be sure to tell your sonographer if you have:

    Had a stroke

Undergone a previous procedure, such as a bypass, balloon angioplasty, or stent placement

Symptoms of stroke, like sudden short-term loss of strength, speech, or vision

    Taking medicines

    Doubt you may be pregnant.

  • Patient may be requested to drink several glasses of water, or other clear liquids, starting 1 to 2 hours before the test in order to have a full bladder.

Patient may be asked to empty your bladder before or during the procedure.

Patient must inform the sonographer if he/she has undergone previous abdominal surgery, abdominal imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI or if the female patient doubts that she may be pregnant.

  • Patient may be requested to drink several glasses of water, or other clear liquids, starting 1 to 2 hours before the test in order to have a full bladder.

In case of patients undergoing a trans vaginal ultrasound, she may be asked to empty the bladder before the procedure.

Patient must inform the sonographer if he/she has undergone previous abdominal surgery, abdominal imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI or if the female patient doubts that she may be pregnant.

  • Little preparation is needed for a CT scan.

Patients (with no history of congestive heart failure or are not on dialysis), are asked to drink 64 ounces of water before the exam, especially if the exam is performed with oral or intravenous contrast. If possible, they should start drinking the prescribed quantity 12 hours before their scheduled appointment time.

If the patient is receiving IV CONTRAST he/she should not eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.

Patients are requested to remove jewelry and other metallic objects that might interfere with the scan.

Patients who are breastfeeding are given an opportunity to make an informed decision about whether to continue breastfeeding after receiving intravascularly administered iodinated contrast media or to temporarily abstain. A very small percentage of iodinated contrast medium can be excreted into the breast milk and absorbed by the infant’s gut. The patient can choose to temporarily abstain from breastfeeding for 24 hours with the active expression and discarding of breast milk from both breast during that period.

Patient can also use a breast pump to obtain milk beforehand to use during the 24 hour period following the administration of contrast media.

Prior to the administration of iodinated contrast, patients are screened for the following:

Previous reactions to iodinated contrast media

All severe allergies and reactions (both medications and food)

History of diabetes, kidney disease, pheochromocytoma, solitary kidney, kidney or other transplant, or myeloma

Pregnant or breast-feeding (in women of child-bearing age).

Routine creatinine testing prior to contrast administration is not necessary in all patients. The test should have been performed 30 days prior to contrast administration for patients with renal disease, HIV+, diabetic, hypertensive, over 60 years or on chemotherapy.

If the patient is receiving IV CONTRAST, he/she should not eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.

Patients are requested to remove jewelry and other metallic objects that might interfere with the scan.

Patient does not have to remain on a full bladder for the rest of the test and may use the restroom

Patient should not drink or eat caffeine 4 to 6 hours before your CT Cardiac scan.
