The Department of Pathology was initiated and established in 2005. The Department functions to provide excellence in teaching, diagnostic services and research and is well recognized for its dedicated and innovative approach towards providing accurate and timely diagnostic services in all facets of surgical & anatomic pathology, haematology, coagulation, clinical pathology and cytology to patients from Chengalpattu district, Chennai and other cities of Tamil Nadu & neighboring states.
The haematology, clinical pathology, cytology & histopathology basic services are available round the clock and are complemented by specialized Rapid Diagnostic Frozen section, Immunohistochemistry & Immunofluorescence services in both adult & Paediatric pathology.
The young vibrant team of pathology consists of well qualified faculty (MD/DNB) from eminent institutes and has established its mark in all three aspects of Heath care, Patient Care, Teaching & Research.
NABL Accredited LAB.
EQAS Pathology.
Complete Blood Count with Automated Differential: Includes 36 parameters with a five-part differential Automated Haematology Analyser.
Manual Differential: Includes WBC differentiation, RBC morphology, platelet estimation & Reticulocyte count. This is not an orderable test. If the automated differential fails pre-set flagging criteria, a manual differential is then performed by the laboratory.
Sedimentation Rate (ESR) performed by Automated ESR Analyser.
Special Hematology Testing
Malaria Smears: Quantified Buffy Coat preparations with both thick and thin smears reviewed. Sent to Public Health for infection notification.
Kleihauer-Betke Stain: Screen for fetal bleed and numerate fetal cells if indicated.
Screening for Hemoglobin Analysis (Electrophoresis)/ Thalassemia performed in conjunction with biochemistry department
Osmotic Fragility Testing performed for Spherocyte detection and suspected Herediatry Spherocytosis
services including Direct Coomb’s Test and Indirect Coomb’s Test
Clinical Pathology Section performs Automated Urinalysis, Body fluid analysis & Semen analysis.
Good medical practice requires a tissue diagnosis prior to planning and initiating therapy.
The Surgical Pathology Laboratory provides accessioning, description, dissection and submission of fresh and fixed tissue material, from biopsies and partial/total organ resections, to Histopathology Lab for routine processing as well as for specialized procedures such as Special Stains, Immunohistochemistry and immunofluoresence.
Additional special procedures include frozen section ( Rapid tissue diagnosis, Intraoperative diagnostic services) processing for immediate evaluation of presence tumor or margins.
The field of surgical pathology evaluates tissues removed from living patients during surgery or other types of invasive procedures in order to diagnose a disease and aid in the development of a treatment plan. Also to provide information regarding prognosis such as status of surgical margins (complete or incomplete removal of disease), size and extent of disease, including tumor invasion into adjacent structures, tumor grade (well, moderately, or poorly differentiated) and presence of metastasis to regional lymph nodes or distant organs.
Specialised Neuropathology (Squash cytology), Nephropathology& Dermatopathology (with Immunofluorescence), Endoscopic tissue diagnosis are part of surgical pathology.
Frozen Sections for rapid diagnosis including intra-operative consultations by the department of pathology
Transplant biopsies (Renal, & Liver) are reported periodically.
An autopsy is a post-mortem examination of a deceased human to determine the cause and manner of death, and to study any disease process or injury that may be present.
At CHRI, fetal autopsies are performed to:
Cytopathology is the study of individual cells to detect disease. It is used most commonly to diagnose cancer, and to screen for cancer precursors; however, infectious diseases and other conditions can also be detected.
The missions of the CHRI Cytopathology Laboratory are to:
Provide a good quality cytologic diagnostic services in a timely manner to patients and clinicians
Provide high quality education in all aspects of cytopathology to students at all levels
Pioneer new technologies and molecular techniques that aid in cytologic diagnosis
Participate in local agencies and workgroups that improve screening of PAP smears as a part of health services to community women populations.
Body Fluid Analysis: Includes a manual red and white cell count and a differential based on a cytocentrifuge prepared smear. CSF specimens are performed STAT. Synovial fluid analysis may also includes Crystals.
